I completely agree with the idea that you should try and get all the nutrients you need through diet. I try to avoid processed foods (try is key word) and will describe my diet in another post. However, I hold the generally logical, but somewhat unsupported notion that it is extremely difficult in our environment to get everything we need and therefore supplements are almost a necessity. An additional angle I see is that in order to counter aspects of our modern environment (stress, toxins, etc.), it is effective to take certain compounds that give the body what it needs to cope. This is all based on my observation that the modern environment we’ve created for humans to live does not match our bodies design well, we are surrounded by toxins that inflame our systems and rob them of ability to absorb nutrients efficiently, and that our food is less nutrient dense that it was in the past.
I break my supplements down into categories. First are daily supplements, these are things I feel are necessary to counter the abovementioned chronic issues. Second are weekly supplements, they are not as critical in my mind as I either get them in my diet sufficiently enough or just don’t feel it is worth the cost to take them daily. The weekly supplements are also things I take in higher doses for particular reasons. For example, I have found that if I know I’ll be out in the sun for an extended period I take a high dose of vitamin E before and after to reduce sun damage/burn. If I have been exposed to a virus, I’ll take higher than usual doses of zinc with quercetin to try and slow the viral replication. I also have supplements I cycle. These are substances that cause a reaction in your body, like activating certain immune functions. I don’t want to take those daily as I assume (unscientifically) that my body will build a tolerance (adjust and won’t react to same dosage). The final category are supplements I take to do a specific job, like a cleanse. I’ll couple a dietary change (limited diet or fast) and one of these to reset my guy or do a hard liver cleanse.
There are actually more things I want to take, but it gets pricey and honestly at one point I was taking like 30 capsules a day. That seemed excessive.
